Where ancient techniques create modern art
The raku firing process begins with ceramics being fired in a kiln at extreme temperatures. Once the pieces reach a molten, red-hot state, they are quickly removed from the kiln and placed into a reduction chamber, typically filled with sawdust or paper. This rapid transition, combined with the natural materials used in the reduction process, creates the rich and diverse textures, colors, and patterns that make raku ceramics so extraordinary. The element of chance—from the way the flames lick the surface to how the smoke penetrates the glaze—means no two pieces are ever the same.
